Projects and Hopes

A little about the update...

I wanted to write a brief note for those who are wondering about the new look and what’s really going on. I decided to switch to a CMS after several months of looking at my own homebrew CMS and realizing that there is something to be gained by working in groups with others on the same project.

I had played around with Joomla and Drupal as CMS options and then I came across Textpattern. This definitely is the system for me. Although I have had to beef up my PHP skills a little bit, the transition from server-client javascript made that very easy.

The structure of Textpattern is really superior to even systems like WordPress for several reasons. The first reason that was obvious to me was that this system clearly allows the content creation and code creation hats to reside in completely separate worlds.

These two world cross in the realm of custom tags, where a programmer can make a user-friendly container for his code, supplying the tag name, properties, etc. and allowing the content manager to do their job without having to worry about how things are going to look in the end.

The plug-in infrastructure is fantastic, allowing folks with little coding expertise to simply plug-and-play, while coders can go in and tweak the system very easily.

I’m really looking forward to version 4.0.4 – a lot of new things will be added to make an already great system even better.
